We think that the semi-detailed bark in the bottom image works better than super-simple implied texture in this case. We have yet to decide if we're going to go with one or two bark styles (variation to suggest different kinds of trees in the area) so i'm going to continue with texturing the other roots in the same style and we'll work out from there if we'd benefit from subtle change.
